Friday afternoon I had a hugely embarrassing moment on air at my new radio gig.
Don't get me wrong - I've been making mistakes all week. Mostly technical screw-ups because the equipment is all new to me and very different than what I've used in the past. But Friday I pulled a doozy. You won't understand it unless you read this - my '60 Seconds of Sports Stuff' feature from Friday:
"One of my favorite bloggers is Lindsay Schnell from Sports Illustrated and according to Lindsay's latest blog, there are way too many Olympic Sports to keep track of. Do we really need all those sports?
For example, rhythmic gymnastics. We already have gymnastics - why do we need to add ribbon twirling to it and create a whole new event? I'm not saying I dislike rhythmic gymnastics, but I think if you wanna see an impressive athlete, watch some of those gymnasts doing backflips on a four inch beam. That's impressive.
How about archery and shooting? Do we really need to be training anyone (who's NOT in law enforcement) how to aim properly.
Another Olympic sport that I actually like to play, but I don't know why it's in the Olympics: badminton. If that's an Olympic sport, extreme dodgeball should be one too. And it would be a lot more fun to watch on tv.
And number one on the Sports Illustrated list of sports that shouldn't be in the Olympics: racewalking. If you don't know what I'm talking about, google racewalking on youtube. Then explain to me why they're getting rid of softball, but keeping racewalking in the Olympics."
That was my sports feature on Friday and I was pretty happy with how it sounded on air. Until I was given these important facts:
- One of the biggest athletes to come out of my small Okanagan beach town is a rhythmic gymnast
- She won medals at the Pan Am Games and she competed in the '96 Olympics
- Our station actually sponsored her trip to the '96 Olympics
- She is still living in my town, coaching and mentoring young rhythmic gymnasts
- The big cheese at my radio station (a really nice guy) is a friend of hers
And the first Olympic sport I mock openly at my new job? Rhythmic gymnastics. What are the odds?
Arrrrgh.

When we both quit laughing we will commiserate with you............... Sorry but we are still laughing. Tomorrow will be better.

I'm sure I'll have even more disastrous screw-ups, and I'll be sure to post them! By the way, any idea how much of the Olympics will be broadcast in Mexico?
Enjoy your week guys...
