We took a drive around Tucson today.
This is one of my favourite cities in the USA:
- it's really spread out and doesn't feel crowded
- lots of amenities, everything you need
- Tucson is cheaper than many American spots
- the fall/winter weather is perfect (for us)
- and the cactus and palm trees are a cool bonus
Some of the streets feel like old school Hollywood or Palm Springs in the 60's.
Maybe that's what inspired us to head to the bowling alley today.
I haven't been bowling in years and have never tried 10 pin bowling, but it was a hoot.
The total cost was $10.97 for 2 people, 2 games each, including shoe rental - well worth it. This could become a regular Sunday thing for us.
Just a coupla wacky cats living on the edge.
$$$ - Quick budget note: other than buying the Tucson 2-for-1 Passport book (for local attractions), the cash we paid for bowling today was the first money we've spent on entertainment. Everything else we've been doing daily is free (tennis, baseball, hiking, exploring) and all of our meals have been eaten at home in the RV.
Yet we're having a great time... and we have both lost weight from all the activity and healthy food. I'd be losing even more if the beer weren't so damn cheap here :)

If you guys are going to be there all winter, ask some of the local's about Quartzite in January. It isn't all that far away from you.
One of the nations biggest flea markets! There will be a bus meeting there also that month, about 200-300 bus nuts from all across America will be there.
We won't. Heading out this week in the bus for a road trip of 5-6 days, heading west to New Mexico.

There are a couple museums and gardens you can visit there in Tucson. I seem to remember a wildlife museum and some excellent restaurants ;-) Also isn't there some kind of western town (a place where they film or?)We miss bowling now and again - heard there is a bowling center in Merida.

BoxCar - yes, we've heard about the flea market in Quartzite. Not sure if we'll get there cause I'm not much for crowds and it sounds like one big PeopleFest. Have you been before?
We're thinking of heading to Roswell, NM in January though... Looking forward to seeing a post about your NM trip.

Senor C - Our Tucson Passport book has a whole whack of places to see at 2-for-1 admission prices. This year we're gonna check out the Pima Air Museum, the Tucson Zoo and the Biosphere. With a little bowling and a lotta tennis and hiking mixed in.
The town you're thinking of is Tombstone ... I've been there once and want to show My Fella the Old West cemetery there ... then we'll drive down to Bisbee, a cool little mining town built on a hillside. There's really lots to explore around this part of the country. Did you spend much time in AZ when you lived in southern California?

Kelsi,
We have consistently shied away (avoided) Quartzite for that very same reason, too many folks. I do not do well in large groups of people.
We are shagging out of here this afternoon about 2:30pm and should be sleeping under the stars in Tucumcari New Mexico tonight.
The web page is not being written while I am away, I am going to refresh and renew ... will start publishing upon our return.

Stuff to do in North Okanagan BC: shovel 2 inches of fresh overnite snow and turn the furnace up because it is -6 degrees outside!

Hey kelsi, there's Tombstone, but there's also another town somewhere around Tucson that's more like a movie set. I think this is the place:

It was a neat little place to go.
The desert zoo was one of my favorite zoos ever and we enjoyed the Pima Air Museum. We also found some very nice walks around the University area.

Mr P - I'm sorry. Not that I'm here, but that you're there! :)

hey jjolie - we actually bought our Tucson Passport book at Old Tucson Studios.
I wasn't really impressed - it felt very tourist trap-ish. We didn't see much and maybe it deserves a second chance but I think I'd rather check out the zoo and the Air Museum. Have you been to either of those spots?
And off topic, I LOVED your last blog post about motivation and the young dude who paid off his mortgage. I can totally relate. Great idea for a post. I hope it makes people think... and connect their own dots.

You know, I wasn't really crazy about the Tucson studios - which makes sense given that I didn't even know what it was called. :-) Same reason why I hate Banff - hate the tourist traps, just so mindless. I don't like places with too many people around, it makes me feel anxious.
Yup, been to the zoo (LOVED it) and the air museum (LIKED it).
Thanks for the kudos on the post, but I don't think most people relate. Meh, whatever. :-) People are happy "getting rich slowly". Fine, you take your time, I'll be the one speeding past you on the freeway. In my moho. :-)
