My Fella is a fisherman.
Actually he's a golf teacher and pro shop manager, but in his spare time he's A Fisherman. I don't think we were back in Canada for twenty four hours before he was buying his BC fishing license online.
Tonight after work, he spread out a bunch of stuff on his computer desk:
- fish hooks
- teeny scissors and wire cutter thingies
- glitzy tinsel and brightly coloured pipe cleaners
- feathers
- beads
- and a little sewing kit
I wondered if he got a side gig making costumes for drag queens* but it turns out he was actually settling in to create some new fly hooks. For fly fishing.
*Please note: I have absolutely nothing against drag queens. They are the Masters of sequinned and beaded, glittery, colorful garb. The problem is I don't wear jewellery or make-up, so it was hard to come to terms with the fact that My Fella's fishing equipment (and every single drag queen in the universe) is more glamorous than I am.
Hopefully these colorful little monsters will help him snag some of the dumber fish in the lake cause I'm always up for fresh fish.
Although if the past is any indication the fish usually win. Even with these creative little fly hooks I can probably hold off on getting the frying pan ready :)
Unfortunately fishing will have to wait, 'cause today My Fella is trading in his fly hooks for a shovel.
A couple posts ago I mentioned that the RV lot we're staying on this summer is undeveloped and we've volunteered to do a little landscaping if the owner buys the materials/plants. Well, Project Landscape: The Big Dig, has begun.
Yesterday I was outside measuring spots for boxwoods shrubs and outlining the cedar trench. The Big Dig gets underway today.
Pictures coming up.
Our landlord makes hooks that are really interesting. He likes to shore fish here. The hooks are all different weights, etc.. He melts the stuff, pours it into molds and then when they are hard/dry he paints and decorates them. It is a hobby for him along with the fishing.
He always seems to come home with fish, sooooo.
Next time you are down here you should come and see them, I am sure your fisherman would have a ball looking at them and discussing them. Tell him to bone up on his Spanish fishing terms this summer. The landlord speaks a little English; but not a lot.

Hi Brenda, would love to see 'El Pescador' in action. That sounds very interesting to see him making his lures from scratch. Is he one of those fisherman that doesn't use a fishing rod?? That is something I tried and failed horribly at. And yes I will brush up on my Spanish fishing terms. Mi Espanol es no bien.

Hi, no he uses fishing rods. He is really into fishing and has all the mod cons to go with it. He orders some of his rods from the USA and has what looks to me like enough different rods to outfit a group. The rods he uses are heavier than a normal fishing rod that we used in the lakes in Canada, not talking about the fly fishing ones, just the regular ones.
He and his fishing buddies go away sometimes for 3 or 4 days on trips and he has all the conveniences of home when he goes, even a shower tent lol.
I believe he melts lead and pours it into the molds that he has made himself, when they are hard he paints, decorates with eyes, etc.. It is quite a process. He is a very smart, inventive, artistic man and I am sure you would enjoy meeting him and seeing what he does.
He can manage in English as long as he doesn't have to get too in depth. He finds it hard as we do in Spanish, so I think he understands better when we struggle for words lol. You can get a long way with charades also as Roy knows well.
Have a great summer.
